It feels like dates are finally having their moment—and honestly, I’m here for it. These naturally sweet little gems are showing up in everything from smoothies to gourmet charcuterie boards. But for me, they’ve always been a staple in our family.
Growing up, dates were a regular were added to sweet treats or just snacked on solo, they were always around. Like many things from childhood, I thought everyone grew up this way—until I met my husband. Let’s just say his feelings on dates aren’t quite as enthusiastic.
Fast forward to a trip we took to Palm Desert, California. If you’ve been, you know about the legendary Shields Date Garden. I stocked up, of course, and after eating the varieties of stuffed dates, I had one last precious box of their Medjool dates. I wanted to do something special with them—something classic and meaningful.
So, I went straight to the place that never lets me down: my grandma’s recipe box.
And there it was. A recipe for Date Balls.

These little bite-sized treats are the perfect way to ease someone into the world of dates. They’re soft, sweet, and have that chewy caramel-like vibe with just the right amount of crunch from Rice Krispies and pecans. If a soft praline and a Rice Krispie treat had a baby, this would be it.
Even better? The whole recipe takes about 20 minutes from start to finish—rolling and all!
Now let’s talk coconut. The original recipe calls for rolling them in shredded coconut, and if that’s your thing, go for it! But for me? Coconut is a no-go. It’s a texture thing. Instead, I roll mine in a little sugar and they turn out perfectly sweet with a light sparkle that makes them extra special.

Whether you grew up with dates or you’re just now hopping on the bandwagon, this recipe is a keeper. Make them for a holiday platter, a cozy movie night snack, or just because you deserve a treat that feels homemade and nostalgic.

@purpleiriseverywhere These are absolutely delicious! Cooking my way through my Grandma's recipes box has been so much fun. I am sure if these were rolled in coconut I didn't give them a chance when I was little, boy was I missing out! #dates #dessert #sweets #grandmasrecipes #baking #mhk #manhattanks #fortriley
