Nestled right in the heart of Manhattan, Kansas, the Manhattan City Park is a true community gem and one of my favorite places to unwind, explore, and enjoy everything from music and splash pads to scenic walking trails and local history. Whether you're a local looking for your next weekend plan or a visitor searching for things to do in Manhattan, KS, City Park should be high on your list.
This 45-acre park offers something for everyone, no matter the season. From lively summer afternoons at the Aquatic Center to cozy winter nights on the ice rink, Manhattan City Park is the perfect year-round destination. It’s a go-to spot for family fun, peaceful solo strolls, picnics, pick-up games, and even a bit of Kansas lore!

Hit the Trail: Clarenburg Trail at City Park
First things first—let’s stretch our legs. The Clarenburg Trail winds around the entire park, and one full loop clocks in at exactly one mile. It’s a favorite among walkers, joggers, and families just out for a scenic stroll. The trail is flat, paved, and tree-lined in many areas, making it ideal for every fitness level.
Looking for a low-key way to get your steps in or take a mental reset? This trail is calling your name. Bonus: It’s pet-friendly, so bring your four-legged friend along for the fun!
Splash into Summer: The Aquatic Center & Splash Park
When the Kansas summer heat kicks in, there’s no better place to cool off than the City Park Aquatic Center. This isn’t your basic pool setup—we’re talking lazy river, water slides, diving boards, lap lanes, and more. Whether you’re looking to get some exercise or just float the day away, the Aquatic Center delivers big summer fun for all ages.
Nearby, you’ll find the free splash park, which is an absolute favorite for the littlest members of the community. Located right next to the Johnny Kaw statue and the upgraded playground, the splash park has interactive water features and shaded seating areas for parents to keep cool while the kids run wild. Pro tip: Bring a change of clothes for the kiddos, because “just getting our feet wet” turns into a full soak every time.
Johnny Kaw: A Kansas Legend Standing Tall
One of the most iconic features of Manhattan City Park is the 24-foot-tall statue of Johnny Kaw. If you’re unfamiliar, Johnny is a fictional Kansas folk hero dreamed up by a Kansas State University horticulture professor, George Filinger, in the 1950s. His goal? Create a legendary figure for Kansas, much like Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill. Mission accomplished.
The statue was built in 1966 and has become a must-visit photo op and conversation starter for visitors. You’ll find Johnny near the splash park and playground, standing tall with a scythe in hand and a big Kansas grin. Want to learn more about Johnny Kaw? Playtime Perfect: Playgrounds & Sports Courts
Speaking of family-friendly fun, the newer playground near Johnny Kaw and the splash park is modern, safe, and packed with ways to climb, slide, swing, and zip around. It's the kind of spot that can easily keep your crew entertained for hours.
And for the older kids (and adults), City Park features basketball courts, tennis courts, and even sand volleyball pits. It’s not uncommon to catch a friendly neighborhood game or pick-up match during nice weather.
If your kids are involved in youth sports, chances are you’ve spent a few summer evenings at the ballfields on the west side of the park. These fields are home to baseball and softball games throughout the season and come complete with bleachers, concessions, and all the nostalgic summer vibes.
Larry Norvell Band Shell is used for Live Music & Community Events
One of the most beloved gathering spots in the park is the Larry Norvell Band Shell, home to a variety of live performances and community events throughout the year. If you've ever attended "Arts in the Park," you already know how magical it is to relax on a blanket, enjoy a picnic, and listen to live music under the stars.

The Rose Garden: A Manhattan Tradition in Bloom
Just steps away from the Band Shell, you’ll find the stunning Rose Garden, originally built by the Kiwanis Club in 1927. Today, the garden continues to bloom thanks to the care of Manhattan Parks and Recreation. While I visited a bit early in the spring (before the full bloom and fountain kickoff), it’s truly a picturesque spot once summer is in full swing.
This is a peaceful area of the park, perfect for snapping some photos, enjoying a quiet moment, or just soaking in the sweet scent of dozens of rose varieties. It’s a popular spot for prom and wedding photos, too!
Winter Fun at the Wefald Pavilion
When the temperatures drop and you start dreaming of snowflakes and scarves, Manhattan City Park transforms again—this time into a winter wonderland! The Jon and Ruth Ann Wefald Pavilion becomes home to the city’s seasonal ice skating rink, offering both lessons and open skating times for the community.
Whether you’re a seasoned skater or wobbling your way through your first time on the ice, the rink is a charming and festive way to enjoy the colder months. There’s just something magical about gliding across the ice while surrounded by twinkling lights and chilly Kansas air.
Step Back in Time: The Pioneer Cabin
History buffs, this one’s for you! The Pioneer Cabin at Manhattan City Park is a tribute to the early settlers of the area, made possible by the Riley County Historical Society. The cornerstone was laid back in 1915, and the cabin was entirely built by volunteers.
It’s a simple structure but rich in meaning, reminding us of the grit and determination it took to build this town from the ground up. During special events, the cabin is often open for visitors and tours—definitely worth a peek if you catch it at the right time.
Pavilion Rentals & Family Gatherings
City Park is also a go-to spot for family reunions, birthday parties, and BBQs, thanks to its variety of pavilions and shelters available for reservation. Many are located conveniently near parking, restrooms, and play areas, making them ideal for hosting groups of all sizes.
Some shelters are near quieter areas of the park for a little more peace and privacy, while others are right in the heart of the action, perfect for keeping an eye on busy kids!
