Discover the 2022 Mural: Building of the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, KS.

A mural of people working on a wall at Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, KS.

Painted in 2022, the "Building of the Sunset Zoo" mural depicts the origins and history of the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, KS. The Sunset Zoo was founded in 1933 as part of the New Deal Program and the Works Progress Administration which helped build large portions of the Sunset Zoo from 1935-1941. Many columns from the WPA program still stand today and have been incorporated into the zoo's latest exhibit, Exhibition Asia.

This mural is one to spend some time at and take it all in. The depictions of the original enclosures being built with KS Hill and the Flint Hills in the distance show visitors how far our wonderful zoo has come. You will also see animals depicted throughout the mural, some of these animals were the first animals at the zoo and others are notable animals at the zoo today.

This mural is located in the Amur leopard viewing area and reaches over 16 feet tall. This mural was painted by local muralist, Phyllis Pease, and took three months to complete. Like all the murals in town, they are made possible by generous donations and this one is no exception. The "Building of the Sunset Zoo" mural was made possible by long-time zoo supporter Mimi Balderson in memory of Chuck Jackson, a longtime Sunset Zoo supporter.

You will also notice the metal flamingos in the area, these statues are in memory of Sall Hummel Wagner.
