First off, "Welcome to K-State"! 🎉 Whether you're moving across the country or just across town, starting your journey at Kansas State University (aka K-State) is a big deal. This isn’t just college—it’s the beginning of a brand-new chapter in your life, and I’m so excited for you!

I can still remember packing up my mom's car to move here in 1998. I had that thing packed so full that the tires were going flat, and my dad quickly informed me that I would need to take some things out. Now, looking back, it was the first of many lessons I learned during my college years, but I wouldn't change them for anything. I can still remember wanting to "go home," but my parents wouldn't let me. Some things worked, some didn't, but my love for this town and KSU only grew, and it's why I chose to build my life here.

Located in the heart of the Flint Hills, Manhattan, KS (lovingly known as The Little Apple), is more than just a college town—we are a community that embraces Wildcats with open arms. From local coffee shops and unique eats to stunning sunsets and purple pride, you’re about to experience something special.

As an alumna of KSU, here are my top 10 tips to help you make the most of your college years at Kansas State University. Whether you’re a freshman living in the dorms or a transfer student navigating Aggieville for the first time, this guide will set you up for success.

1. Get Involved Early (and Often!)

K-State is known for its family feel, and one of the best ways to experience it is by getting involved on campus. With over 500 student organizations, there’s something for everyone—academic clubs, service groups, Greek life, intramurals, and more.

Why it matters: It’s the fastest way to make friends, build your network, and feel at home.

👉 Pro Tip: Don’t wait! The Activities Carnival at the beginning of the semester is a great place to explore your options.

2. Explore Aggieville—but Know Your Limits

Ah, Aggieville. The beloved stretch of restaurants, boutiques, and nightlife right next to campus. You’ll probably hear about it within your first week, and yes—it’s a rite of passage. But it’s also home to iconic local businesses, live music, and delicious food.

Must-visits:

  • Varsity Donuts and the Varsity Truck for late-night eats (you haven’t lived until you’ve had their mac & cheese grilled cheese)
  • So Long Saloon (hello, raspberry black bean dip!)
  • Kite's (their burgers are a rite of passage)
  • Aggieville Coffee Shops for late-night study fuel

👉 Pro Tip: Be safe, stay with friends, and keep that Wildcat ID close.

3. Take Advantage of Student Perks Around Manhattan, KS

Your K-State student ID is basically a magic key to the city. 🪄 From discounts at local restaurants to free entry at the Flint Hills Discovery Center and reduced movie tickets, there are tons of perks.

Don’t miss:

  • Free transportation on ATA Bus around town
  • Discounted gym memberships at the Rec
  • Deals on game tickets-Go State!

👉 Pro Tip: Follow local businesses on Instagram—many post exclusive student deals!

4. Make the Rec Your Friend

The Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex (aka The Rec) is more than just a gym. It’s a wellness hub. With classes like yoga, Zumba, and cycling, plus rock climbing, basketball courts, and a lazy river-style pool, it’s the perfect stress reliever.

I always enjoyed signing up for intramurals as well. Since sports were a huge part of my life, this was an easy way for me to make friends.

Why it matters: Mental and physical wellness go hand in hand, especially during finals.

👉 Pro Tip: Sign up early for group classes—they fill up fast!

5. Find Your Favorite Study Spots (Outside the Dorms)

Sure, the dorms are great—but sometimes, a change of scenery helps your brain kick into gear. Luckily, Manhattan has some seriously cozy and caffeine-filled options. During my time at KSU, Hale and Bluestem were my favorites, but we have new spots available now!

Best local study spots:

  • Arrow Coffee Co. – bright, modern, and full of hustle
  • Radina’s (multiple locations, including campus!)
  • Bluestem Bistro in Aggieville
  • K-State Library’s Great Room – aka the Harry Potter Room ✨

👉 Pro Tip: Bring headphones. Even quiet spots get noisy during finals.

6. Eat Local—It’s Worth It

Yes, the dining halls are convenient. But some of the best food in Manhattan, KS, is found in our local restaurants. Supporting small businesses not only means tastier meals—it also connects you to the community.

Some local favorites to check out:

  • Bourbon and Baker- love their small plates to try new flavors
  • Taphouse-their upper patio is amazing.
  • AJ's Pizza- awesome wings, and their pizza is pretty delish, especially their special during Lent. It's crab rangoon, and it is amazing!
  • The DoughBro – really good bierocks, giant cookies, and delicious cinnamon rolls
  • The Farmhouse in Riley – serving up hearty and delicious meals right outside of town.
  • Taco Lucha – because every college student needs a go-to taco joint
  • So Long Saloon - nothing better than sharing some fried pickles, bean dip, and then enjoying an awesome burger!

👉 Pro Tip: Plan a local restaurant night with your new friends once a week.

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

College life has its challenges, but you are never alone. There are so many of us locals who were in the same place you are, and this is all normal every year at this time. K-State offers a wide range of support services—from academic tutoring and career coaching to counseling and health services. Don't hesitate to reach out and ask for help if you need it.

Resources to bookmark:

  • Academic Achievement Center
  • K-State Counseling Services
  • Powercat Financial Counseling

👉 Pro Tip: Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Use those resources!

8. Keep an Eye on Local Events (There's More Than Just Football!)

Yes, K-State football is a big deal (and you must experience a game at Bill Snyder Family Stadium!), but there’s so much more happening in Manhattan.

Look out for:

  • Purple Power Play – a welcome-back festival every fall
  • Manhattan Farmers Market on Saturday mornings
  • Arts in the Park – outdoor summer concerts
  • Sunset Zoo and Expedition Asia – a local gem
  • Check out the areas Murals - they are all over town
  • Hike the Konza and explore the trails around town
  • Enjoy the fun and food of Downtown MHK

👉 Pro Tip: Subscribe to local event calendars and follow me, @PurpleIrisEverywhere, and @cityofmhk on social media.

9. Learn to Navigate Weather in the Flint Hills

Welcome to Kansas, where it’s 95° and humid one day and snowing the next. 😅 Manhattan weather can be unpredictable, so come prepared.

Must-haves:

  • A solid umbrella (seriously!)
  • Layers and a warm coat
  • Sunscreen and bug spray for outdoor adventures

👉 Pro Tip: Don’t pack away the shorts just because it’s October—you might need them again in January.

One of my favorite places to spend time with 50,000+ of my family and friends.

10. Embrace the Wildcat Spirit—You’re Part of the Family Now 💜

There’s nothing quite like the K-State family. It’s not just a slogan—it’s a way of life. From the first time you hear the Wabash Cannonball to wearing purple every Friday, you’ll start to feel it too.

Traditions to try:

  • Attend the Homecoming parade
  • Learn the K-S-U chant at games
  • Volunteer at Cats’ Cupboard (our student food pantry)
  • Snap a selfie at the K-State sign by Anderson Hall

👉 Pro Tip: Say hi to Willie the Wildcat when you see him on campus—you’ll be glad you did.

Final Thoughts: You’ve Got This!

Your college years will be filled with growth, challenge, friendship, and unforgettable memories—and there’s no better place to do it than Kansas State University. Whether you’re a born-and-raised a Wildcat or this is your first time in the Midwest, I promise you this: You belong here.

Soak it all in. Explore. Learn. Laugh. And remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times—this is all part of the adventure. You’re not just attending school; you’re becoming part of something special.
