Every year, since 1950, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a small town in Western Kansas transforms into the "Christmas City of the High Plains." That small town, is my father's hometown, Wakeeney, KS. As a child I can remember going every year to the tree lighting, it was always so magical.
Its enchanting light displays, festive events, and warm sense of community make it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the joy and nostalgia of a classic Christmas. Whether you're from Kansas or planning a road trip to discover the charm of small-town America, WaKeeney's Christmas celebration is an unforgettable experience.
WaKeeney’s journey to becoming the Christmas City of the High Plains began in 1950 when two local businessmen, Conrad "Connie" Ochs, and Jake Heckman, wanted to create something special for their community. Inspired by their love of the holidays, they decided to adorn the town with an extravagant Christmas display. What started as a modest project grew into a cherished tradition that continues to this day.
Volunteers work tirelessly to bring the Christmas spirit to life each year, and the results are nothing short of magical. The centerpiece of WaKeeney’s holiday display is its iconic 35-foot Christmas tree, set at the Main Street and Russell Avenue intersection. Surrounding it are thousands of twinkling lights, colorful garlands, and handcrafted decorations, creating a scene straight out of a Hallmark movie.

WaKeeney’s downtown transforms into a dazzling winter wonderland that rivals even the biggest city displays. Over 6,000 lights illuminate the town, complemented by more than 1,400 feet of fresh greenery, handmade wreaths, and colorful decorations. The entire display centers around the towering Christmas tree, which serves as a beacon of holiday cheer.
Stroll along Main Street and take in the festive atmosphere. Each storefront is beautifully decorated, with some shops offering extended hours and holiday sales. The lights are on every evening from Thanksgiving weekend through New Year’s, making it the perfect place for an evening walk with friends or family.
The magic of WaKeeney’s Christmas season officially begins with the Annual Lighting Ceremony, held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This event is the highlight of the holiday season and draws visitors from across the region.
The evening kicks off with carolers, holiday treats, and festive activities. At dusk, Santa arrives and the countdown begins! When the switch is flipped, downtown WaKeeney is bathed in the glow of thousands of red and green sparking lights. It’s a moment that fills the air with excitement and marks the start of the holiday season in the Christmas City of the High Plains.
This year, at the lighting, I was transported by to my childhood, and the magic that the season always seems to bring.

No Christmas celebration is complete without a visit from Santa! WaKeeney’s Santa’s Workshop, located in the North Pole, was a family favorite! My sister and I were never going to miss a chance to speak to the big guy himself. For those looking for directions, the workshop is set up near the main square, adding to the festive vibe of downtown. We also had to check out the Reindeer, a couple of times.
Bundle up in a cozy blanket, sip on hot cocoa, and take in the sights and sounds of the season with a horse-drawn carriage ride. This nostalgic experience is a favorite for families and couples alike, offering a unique way to enjoy the town’s festive ambiance.
WaKeeney’s small-town charm extends to its local shops and eateries, many of which embrace the holiday spirit. Browse unique gifts and handcrafted items at local boutiques, or warm up with a hearty meal at one of WaKeeney’s cozy restaurants.
For those with a sweet tooth, be sure to stop by a local bakery. This year, in addition to the holiday treats, we indulged in a hot cocoa-cinnamon roll! It was so rich but perfect for the evening, the best part was, they were fresh out of the oven! Supporting small businesses is a big part of the WaKeeney Christmas experience, and you’re sure to find something special to take home.
