When the Wildcats take the field at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, it’s not just the players who feel the adrenaline; the whole town of Manhattan buzzes with anticipation. The energy before a home game is truly electric. KSU football brings everyone together, from long-time residents to new students, uniting them under a shared banner of purple pride. Game days transform the town into a sea of purple, with everyone proudly sporting their KSU gear and cheering on the Wildcats.
For many families, attending KSU football games is a cherished tradition and in some ways, a lasting legacy. It's a time to gather, celebrate, and make memories. My family is one of these families, and with several family members playing for KSU, we are KSU Proud to the core. Our family legacy started with my grandfather and then continued with both of my uncles when they attended KSU.
My mom, quite a bit younger would drive to all of the home games (basketball and football) with my grandfather from their hometown in western Kansas. They would wait in line, grab popcorn, head to their seats, and cheer for the entire game. My mom also said from time to time my grandpa would provide additional feedback during the game, but I am sure it was all positive. 🙂 After the game was over because they never left early, they would drive the three hours back home!
Tailgating with family and friends is all part of the electric atmosphere of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. You will most likely never meet a stranger when tailgating at the stadium and you will almost always find someone to lend a helping hand if necessary because that is who we are, we are family. These experiences are woven into the fabric of family life and passed down from generation to generation.
It is undeniable that KSU football is a significant economic driver for our Manhattan community. Local businesses thrive as fans flock to town for game days, filling up hotels, restaurants, and shops. You can always tell when it is a home game weekend by the influx of people in town. Fans come and purchase tailgating supplies and fan merchandise, and dining out becomes an essential part of the game day experience, contributing to the local economy and supporting small businesses.
Kansas State University students and alumni share a deep connection to KSU football. For students, attending games is a rite of passage, a way to bond with peers and feel a part of something bigger. For the alumni, returning to Manhattan for games is a nostalgic journey, reconnecting with old friends and reliving the glory days. After all, we know there is nothing like a Wildcat Tailgate and the best pregame in all of college football with the Wabash Cannonball!
KSU football embodies the spirit of Manhattan, reflecting the town’s resilience, dedication, and community focus. The team’s hard work and determination mirror the values of the people who live here, creating a strong sense of identification with the Wildcats’ successes and challenges. I can remember coming to games with my mom, walking up right before kick-off, buying our tickets, and having our pick of seats to now, seats are purchased months in advance, parking passes are bought and tailgate themes are planned. While the donors, coaches, and players did the heavy lifting, we as a KSU community showed up how we could to support and cheer for the CATS!
