Christmas Tree at the Festival of Lights in Manhattan, KS

There’s something truly special about the holidays in Manhattan, KS. As the Little Apple transforms into a festive wonderland where the entire community comes together to celebrate the season. From twinkling lights and bustling events to cozy traditions and cherished moments with loved ones, Manhattan knows how to make the season merry and bright.

Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, the holidays here are an experience worth savoring. Let’s dive into what makes this season so unforgettable in our vibrant town!

Festive Lights and Cheer

One of my favorite parts of the holidays in Manhattan is how the town lights up—literally. Blue Earth Plaza becomes the centerpiece of the season with its stunning Festival of Lights. Santa flies in on the Friday after Thanksgiving, lights our tree, and then heads back to the North Pole to finish getting ready for Christmas.

The following Friday is the Holiday Lighted Parade through Downtown MHK and City Park. Watching the parade is always fun as it brings out the spirit of the season through a little bit of friendly competition with the floats entered.

Take a stroll around the plaza, grab a hot cocoa, and soak in the festive ambiance. Don’t forget to check out the synchronized light displays that dance to holiday music—it’s a favorite for kids and adults alike!

For those not looking to brave the cold, enjoy a neighborhood tour through town with the help of this blog post or, the Christmas Lights of MHK website!

Small-Town Charm with Big Spirit

Downtown Manhattan truly comes alive during the holidays. Enjoy seeing the decorations at many of the businesses Downtown and make sure to take a carriage ride for a one of kind way to enjoy all the lights and sites! Downtown is the perfect place for holiday shopping while supporting local businesses. From unique gifts at boutique stores to handmade treasures at seasonal pop-up shops, you’re sure to find something special for everyone on your list.

Downtown also rolls out the 12 Drinks of Christmas is a holiday pub crawl that begins in November! Enjoy the creativity of the various downtown mixologists as they create new and fun drinks to celebrate the holiday season.

Don't skip Aggieville, they get in on the fun too! The historic district adds its own charm to the season especially when you step inside The Hi-Lo for Miracle On Moro! The restaurant is transformed into a holiday pop-up with special drinks and a one of kind atmosphere that is sure to get you in the holiday spirit!

Family-Friendly Holiday Fun

The holidays are all about creating memories with loved ones, and Manhattan has plenty of opportunities for family fun. Take the kids to see Santa Claus as he makes his rounds through the town. If you’re looking for something more active, lace up your skates and hit the ice rink at the Manhattan Parks and Rec Winter Wonderland—a favorite winter tradition.

The St. Thomas More Cookie Carousel is another can't miss event. Thousands of cookies are made by volunteers and sold on the first Saturday in December. The aroma is mesmerizing and if you are a first-timer, you better come early! People line up and wait for the doors to open and all those cookies are gone within a couple of hours. It is a great opportunity to support local charities and stock up on your favorite cookies for the holidays!

For a unique holiday experience, visit the Flint Hills Discovery Center, which often hosts special seasonal exhibits and events. It’s a great way to mix a little education with the festivities and learn about the beauty of our region during this time of year.

Community Events to Warm Your Heart

Manhattan’s sense of community shines brightest during the holidays. From charity drives to holiday markets, there are countless ways to give back and celebrate with neighbors. I love how so many local organizations come together to spread as much holiday cheer as possible. Whether it’s a toy drive for families in need or a festive fundraiser for a great cause, the holidays in Manhattan are as much about giving as they are about celebrating.

Cozy Traditions at Home

Of course, the holidays aren’t complete without those cozy traditions we all hold dear. For me, it’s baking cookies in the kitchen while a holiday movie plays in the background. Whether you’re hosting friends for a festive gathering or just enjoying quiet moments with family, the holidays are a time to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the little things.
